Baby Bottle Boomerang Success

lisa-steve-webDeborah J. Laws, the Executive Director of the Unionville, Connecticut Crisis Pregnancy Center, reports that the Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser that they held in the Fall was a complete success thanks to the help of 15 local churches and the incredible coordination provided by Lisa Nolan and her family. Lisa’s family has helped coordinate the program for the past eight years.

The Crisis Pregnancy Center has been serving the community for the past 26 years as a nonprofit, volunteer, Christian agency which seeks to provide the assistance and support a woman in crisis pregnancy needs in order to bring her baby to term. For more information please visit:

Below is an article written by Lisa Nolan for the CPC’s Fall newsletter:

washers-webI’ve read “ask and you shall receive” a hundred times while reading my bible over the years and I thought of that scripture while praying for the CPC’s finances before work began on this year’s Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser. Things were tight — really tight. Our sweet, gentle, faithful treasurer was fretting about covering the CPC’s expenses as we faced decreased donations, no doubt due to high gas and grocery prices. The concern in her eyes caused me to turn to the Lord in prayer.

After praying (and asking many others to do so as well) I began writing letters, making calls, speaking at local churches on behalf of the CPC and washing any bottles that were used last year. We also designed a bookmark to stuff inside the bottles hoping to increase the number kitchen-webthat are returned as well as attempting to share information about the CPC with the local community. Do you know the scripture where Jesus fed the 5,000 (not including the women and children) with one loaf of bread and two fish...and they still had 12 baskets remaining after everyone ate until they were full? That’s how I’m feeling about the Baby Bottle Boomerang! The baby bottles began to pour in and just when we think we are finished for the year, the Lord keeps bringing in more! Each year that my family and I organize and coordinate this fundraiser we’ve had the privilege of witnessing the Lord do miraculous things, time and again, but this year He really out did Himself!

We are extremely grateful to our participating churches, church contacts, church secretaries and BBB coordinators. Without the Body of Christ and willing volunteers the Baby Bottle Boomerang program simply wouldn’t work. We are truly humbled by the generosity of the local community through the Church of Jesus Christ; especially in these difficult economic conditions. We pray the Lord would bless each donor for keeping our ministry viable and available to those who need us.

In addition to the churches who bless the CPC year after year with hosting a baby bottle drive, we’re happy and excited to share that several new fellowships joined their number!

The 2008 drive included 15 churches with a wide variety of denominations as well as one community group. If your church or community group would like to participate in 2009 in this fun, family friendly and exciting pro-life fundraiser that also increases community awareness about crisis pregnancy ministry and the services offered at the CPC, we warmly welcome you to contact Lisa@TheCrisisPregnancyCenterCT.org or call (860) 496-7243. We’d love to hear from you!

Some interesting and fun facts reported by Lisa and her family:

Fact: 158 baby bottle fit in a standard dishwasher

Fact: Baby bottles won't dry in the dishwasher (they need to stand top-up on the kitchen counter for a day).

Fact: It's difficult to cook with hundreds of drying baby bottles in the kitchen!

"As of this writing, Choices for Women has a financial cushion in the bank that we've never experienced in our four year history.  The primary reason for this is the success of our Baby Bottle Boomerang 2008 program. It has raised over $26,500 with more bottles to be distributed next month. The program has grown in church participation as well as the amount we've raised each year.  The financial benefit is just the tip of the iceberg as we have grown our volunteer ranks and added new monthly donors as well. We've also been able to get new windows at wholesale pricing and free installation for our Blessings Boutique from contacts made through the Baby Bottle Boomerang."

“WOW! That’s the best way I can describe the Baby Bottle Boomerang. I remember the night I told my board I was buying 3,500 baby bottles.  I still remember the looks on their faces – apprehension. AFTER BBB the look on their faces – priceless. The first year 42 churches participated, we built up our liaison list, and we brought in around $36,000. This past year, when I told the board we needed some more bottles, it was definitely not a problem. This year we brought in over $44,000, and bottles and money are still coming in. People love it, and now wherever I speak in the community, someone tells me about their church participating in the Baby Bottle Boomerang.

We’ve been raising funds using the Baby Bottle Boomerang program since 2001. Every year our donations have increased. In 2007, we raised over $85,000 in 6 churches. Not only has this been one of our largest fundraisers, our local church community identifies the Crisis Pregnancy Center with the baby bottles resulting in increased awareness, new volunteers and additional donations throughout the year. Many thanks to Plans For You for making fundraising so easy and allowing us to focus our efforts on our life changing and life saving ministry.

First Care launched its sixth Annual BBB on August 24th.  Our churches consistently raise over $40,000 in each Baby Bottle Campaign.  Last year, six Christian schools joined the participating churches and added over $20,000 to the total raised for the year.  Every year, we are delighted to add a number of new people to our Prayer Team, our mailing list and our volunteer ranks as a result of the response to the BBB.

The HOPE Center began using the Baby Bottle Boomerang program in 2007.  We have found it to not only be an effective fundraiser but also effective in creating an awareness of our ministry in our local churches.  In the two years of conducting Baby Bottle Campaigns we have raised over $52,000.  We have added 600 households to our mailing list.  A couple of churches have already indicated they will let us do another campaign next year. Plans For You has provided us with support, encouragement, and advice, and our bottles have always shipped on time.  We are thankful for this exciting and painless method of increasing our funds.

We have been doing Bottles for Life (our campaign name) for 7 years.  Our last campaign brought in $49,800+.  The impact to Heartbeats of Licking County has been huge by bringing awareness of our ministry to many more area churches.  That awareness has prompted many churches to give financially to us monthly or annually, and other churches look for ways to help us by sponsoring golf outings, car washes, and service days for us.  We are grateful for what the “bottles” have done for us.

It has been a blessing to conduct multiple Baby Bottle Boomerang campaigns over the last few years.  The congregations at the churches we visit are inspired to know that they are helping our local pro-life efforts and kids LOVE the bottles. They make sure mom and dad are filling them!  Some churches allow us to come back every year!

We have seen that the season of Lent, Mothers Day and before Christmas are excellent times to do a campaign for our ministry that run anywhere from 3 – 5 weeks, but we’ve had success doing the program throughout the year.  I estimate we have collected close to $80,000 over the past 3-4 years.

When we first conducted the Baby Bottle Campaign in the spring of 2003, it was to serve as a bridge for our annual banquets, our major and only fundraiser at the time.  Our first campaign was held Mother’s Day to Father’s Day with 9 churches, and we raised $11,559.37 from a total of 500 bottles that were returned. The results have increased each year, and we have been blessed to share our message with more churches and groups and now have campaigns going throughout the year.

Fast forward to 2008…We now have 2 additional satellite locations. Our Baby Bottle Campaign effort helped to raise awareness and the funds to get those 2 locations up and running, and now also provides support to help meet expenses for them.  We are also in the process of opening a third satellite, and anticipate a generous response from the new churches we will canvas for that effort.  We’ve distributed over 9,000 bottles, and our total to date is the best ever:  $72,896.03 so far, from 52 participating churches in 3 counties!

Who would have ever guessed that this fundraiser would raise over $301,000 since we began using it in 2003.  It has enabled us to provide more services, reach out to the community and help them participate on a personal, meaningful basis to support our ministry.  It has also enabled parents to begin to educate their children as to the sanctity of life, and instill in them the concept that with each of us doing our part, the whole of us can make a tremendous difference in the lives of others. May God be praised for the awesome work He is doing through this opportunity.
